Despite assurances of peace and the deployment of troops, fresh killings have continued in the age-long conflict between Alesi, Ekukunela and Agbaragba communities in Ikom LGA, and Ochon, Isabang and Odonget in neighbouring Obubra LGA of Cross River State.

Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Odey had announced measures, including the deployment of security operatives and the takeover of the disputed land by the state government.

The move, he said, was to permanently end the recurring clashes.

But sources in Ochon and Ofutop told DAILY POST late Thursday that fighting was still raging in surrounding bushes, with casualties reported on both sides.

“As we speak, fighting is ongoing in the bushes, and many lives have been lost,” one source said.

Another added that the deployed operatives “do not know the bushes where the killings take place.”

On Wednesday, the chairman of Ofutop Traditional Rulers’ Council, HRH Atun-Ntun Bassey Okey, raised alarm over his personal safety, confirming that youths had mounted surveillance in border villages to defend their clan.

He alleged that two of his subjects were beheaded, one roasted and eaten, while two others were shot dead, according to viral video.

In a statement signed by media aide to Governor Bassey Otu, Mr. Linus Obogo, the deputy governor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to lasting peace.

He disclosed that the state had vested ownership of the disputed land in government, “extinguishing the root of contention and transforming the territory into a protected heritage under state custody.”

Odey stressed that peace, safety and collective wellbeing remained sacrosanct, urging elders, youths and community leaders to embrace reconciliation, cooperate with security agencies and desist from further hostilities.

Odey said, “Only through unity can progress and stability take firm root across our beloved state.”
