Former England star, Rob Green has said he was baffled by Gareth Southgate’s decision not to sub off Chelsea’s Mason Mount during their goalless draw against the US in the World Cup on Friday.
To Rob Green, it was ‘baffling’ that the midfielder was not replaced with the likes of Phil Foden who sat on the bench throughout the game.
Mount was one of the England stars who could not make an impact against the USA but stayed on the pitch while the likes of Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham and Raheem Sterling were replaced.
“When England was making the first substitutions I had Mason Mount down to come off. It just didn’t come off for him tonight,” former England goalkeeper Green told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“That doesn’t make him a bad player, it happens. It was baffling that he stayed on for the 90 minutes. It was strange.”
The goalless draw came on the back of a 6-2 win against Iran in their first game. England will now hope to win their final group stage game against neighbouring Wales for a chance to progress to the round of sixteen.
