The Benue State Government has restated its commitment to tackling insecurity through strategic actions and enhanced collaboration with security agencies.
This follows criticism from former Commissioner for Education, Prof. Dennis Ityavyar, who accused Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration of failing to effectively address ongoing violence in the state.
Responding to the claims, the Special Adviser on Security and Internal Affairs, Joseph Har, said the government had taken “bold and proactive” steps to safeguard lives and property.
In a statement issued Tuesday in Makurdi, Har explained, “Governor Alia has revitalized the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design strategy, which includes improved night visibility through solar lighting and the removal of visual obstructions.
These measures have drastically reduced incidents such as phone and vehicle snatching.”
He also pointed to the implementation of the Crime Prevention Through Social Development model.
“This initiative tackles the root causes of crime by offering employment opportunities, vocational training for youths, and improved community amenities,” he said.
According to Har, the administration has bolstered the Benue State Civil Protection Guards and aligned their operations with federal forces, including Operation Whirl Stroke. He said the state had also overhauled vigilante structures to enhance intelligence gathering and grassroots security coordination.
“Traditional rulers have been empowered to assist in policing their communities,” Har added.
“We have also deployed modern surveillance systems and ensured additional military presence in key flashpoints such as Guma, Agatu, Ukum, and Katsina-Ala through new police squadrons and a naval base.”
While acknowledging the complex security challenges, Har maintained that the government was making steady progress. “
We’re not claiming perfection,” he stated, “but the trajectory is clear we are securing Benue with focus, determination, and sincerity of purpose.”
He challenged Prof. Ityavyar to “present any instance where the government failed to respond to attacks,” emphasizing that Governor Alia has remained actively engaged in addressing insecurity across affected communities.
