- Background of the Strike
The four internal unions at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU) in Katsina have called off their strike following discussions with a committee established by the Katsina State Government.
The unions involved—Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT)—announced the suspension in a statement jointly signed by their chairman, Murtala Abdullahi, and secretary, Saminu Salisu, on Thursday night.
The statement indicated that the decision resulted from negotiations with the government committee, which agreed to address the key issues that prompted the industrial action. These issues include stopping the intended takeover of the university’s portal by FlexiSaf Edusoft Limited, implementing appropriate salary structures for staff, and resolving other policy-related concerns raised by the unions.
Both parties also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which served as the foundation for the suspension of the strike.
However, the unions highlighted that one significant issue, the payment of 34 months of arrears, remains unresolved. They revealed that the university’s chancellor, Senator Ibrahim Ida, intervened and requested the strike's suspension, assuring that measures would be taken to address the outstanding allowances within a reasonable timeframe. The unions stated that they agreed to temporarily suspend the action based on this assurance.
They also expressed gratitude to the university community for its patience during the strike and reiterated their commitment to fostering industrial harmony.
The internal unions had initiated a two-week warning strike on November 3 due to unpaid arrears, delayed promotions, poor working conditions, and unresolved issues regarding salary adjustments and hazard allowances.
