African Union Commission Chairman, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has asserted that Muslims are the primary victims of Boko Haram in Nigeria, rather than Christians.

Youssouf recently shared this perspective with reporters at the United Nations headquarters while addressing allegations of genocide in Nigeria.

When asked by a reporter about United States President Donald Trump’s recent threats to Nigeria regarding the persecution of Christians, Youssouf responded: “Let me clarify this first, there is no genocide occurring in northern Nigeria.”

“We have issued a statement clarifying that the situation in northern Nigeria is not comparable to the kinds of atrocities we observe in Sudan or in certain regions of eastern DRC.”

“The initial victims of Boko Haram are Muslims, not Christians, and I assert this with documented evidence.”
