Toyin Abraham won the award for ‘Best Actress in a Drama’ at the seventh edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards and gave the best speech of the night on March 14, 2020, at the Eko Convention Centre. The award ceremony dubbed by many as the ‘Nigerian Oscars’ was celebrated with much pomp and pageantry. It was also a night filled with speeches – some funny, some serious, some emotional and some thankful.
Toyin was overwhelmed by the win but she took a minute to thank some special people in her life, including her fans. She had been paired against Shola Sobowale, Zainab Balogun, and Kate Henshaw, and the fans had pulled through for her. She also dedicated the award to her son, Ireoluwa.
She said, “I’m shaking. I acted this movie when I was 7 months and 2 weeks pregnant. So, this is actually for my son, Ireoluwa. And to my best friend, Oko mi, thank you so much. To my director, Akay, thank you so much. To Mr Niyi Akinmolayan, thank you. Thank you guys for keeping it a secret. I don’t even know what to say. To my manager, thank you, Big Sam. Also, to my fans, Toyin Titans thank you so much!”
This was her first AMVCA ever and it was a special one as she got to win it thanks to her first child. She was reported to have been seven months pregnant at the time of the shoot for Elevator Baby.
Toyin Abraham is one of the few first-timers to receive an AMVCA at the show. Others include Timini Egbuson who won the Best Actor in a Drama for his role as Damilare in “Elevator Baby”, Swanky JKA took home the Trailblazer award, Funny Bone also won the award for Best Actor in a comedy for his role in “Smash”.
The Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards was created to celebrate talents across Africa and encourage them to continue to entertain Africans with their gifts and skills. The award ceremony will return next year to celebrate the best out of Africa. Until then, congratulations to all the winners!
