We’re betting more than a few mothers will have their phones buzzing tonight, as Tim McGraw just reminded TV viewers how important it is to give “Mama” a ring.
The country star performed his latest single, “I Called Mama,” on Wednesday night’s ACM Awards.
“I can always hear her smile when I call,” McGraw sang, “I just called to tell you that I loved you/ I was missin’ you and dad, and home, that’s all. I got to really thinkin’ this mornin’/ ‘Bout what’s important.”

“Mama” is featured on McGraw’s new album, “Here On Earth.” He recorded many of its tracks before the coronavirus pandemic took hold in the U.S., and “Mama” is among those that took on a deeper meaning afterwards.
“They pop your eyes open a little bit more than they did originally,” McGraw told The Tennessean. “Now, in the world that we live in, when you hear that song, there’s a whole world of emotion that’s happening on either side of what those lyrics are saying, that are so much deeper.”
One of the song’s biggest fans, of course, is McGraw’s mother. He used a vintage photo of her for the single’s cover art.
“It was (taken) right before she found out about me. She got pregnant with me her senior year of high school. That was sort of poignant in a lot of ways. I texted her, I told her I was using her (photo) in the artwork, and she said, ‘Send me what picture you’re gonna use.’ We had already finished it, but I sent her the picture, and she goes, ‘Does this mean I’m a movie star now?'”
