The popular band have since posted an ambiguous farewell post on their Instagram story on Wednesday.

Frontman Matty Healy and bandmates Adam Hann, Ross MacDonald and George Daniel performed at Glastonbury last year.

They last released their last album Being Funny In A Foreign Language, in 2022 and have racked up nearly four million followers on Instagram.

Their worried fans were left confused after the band shared a comic strip asking: “Did you hear about The 1975?”

The response read: “Yeah, I’m shook up. I wanted that to last forever.”

There was a longer quote next to the comic, with one line reading: “The hardest part of any relationship is to say goodbye.

“As much as we might like things to stay the same, change is an inevitable part of life.

“We can’t simply go on forever, always staying the same, never evolving.”

Many fans quickly raced to social media with their fears that the band may be over.

One wrote: “Oh it’s over’, ‘WHAT IS GOING ON’, ‘My old heart can’t take all of this.”

A second posted: “Please tell me The 1975 are not splitting up?!”

But other eagle-eyed fans ignored all the speculation and insisted they are teasing the release of their sixth album.

This fan wrote: “HELLO WELCOME BACK’, ‘NOBODY MOVE THE 1975 ARE MAKING MOVES.”

In June, Matty was called out by a handful of Glastonbury fans for fronting The 1975’s headline slot .

The Sound hitmaker arrived on The Pyramid stage clutching a Guinness and a fag – complete with a pack of smokes which he lit up through the set – in a rockstar move that irked some viewers watching at home.

The -born frontman is known for his quirky on-stage presence, with his sharp suit, smooth moves and a signature travelator delighting many loyal fans of the Sound hitmakers.

Lead singer often appears on-stage with a glass of wine – yet some viewers watching the band’s first Worthy Farm headline stint from their sofas might not have been aware of his stage habit.

– who are currently on a pause from touring with their only 2025 show – rattled through a series of their hits including Chocolate, I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes), Somebody Else and a rousing finale of About You.

Yet despite the stellar hits and a mission to promote “love and friendship” some fans were less than impressed.

One took to X to argue: “@1975 you should be ashamed of your lead singer! My 14 year daughter loves your music but the state of your lead singer took the decision of us not allowing her to watch you perform!

“Drunk and smoking on stage is totally unacceptable in this era!”

Another then wrote: “Please put down the pint glass.”

One posted: “He’s got a lovely voice but put the cig down Matty.”

Others were impressed with the first headline act on the Pyramid Stage for 2025.

They put: “Absolutely incredibly awesome, fantastic set.”
