University employees represented by the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) have given the Federal Government a 14-day deadline to address all their demands, including the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement.

If the government does not respond to their demands by the end of this 14-day ultimatum, which commenced on October 5, NAAT has stated it will have no choice but to initiate industrial action.

Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma, the president of NAAT, expressed that while the association is willing to engage in dialogue, it will not provide any further notifications if the government takes no action within the two-week period.

This ultimatum follows the results of the 60th regular meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC), led by Comrade Nwokoma, held at the Federal University, Lafia, over the weekend.

“The NEC assessed the progress made since the conciliation meeting hosted by the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment on July 30, 2025, where a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed, as well as the meeting called by the Honourable Minister of Education on September 11, 2025, along with the ongoing developments in the education sector.

“The primary issues at stake include the unfinished renegotiation of the FGN/NAAT 2009 Agreement, which aims to revise current salaries, allowances, and other conditions of service within the Nigerian University system.

“In fact, only the inaugural meeting took place between the Mahmud Yayale Ahmed-led renegotiation committee and NAAT on December 10, 2024. It is concerning to learn that a report has already been submitted by the committee to the Federal Government of Nigeria,” the statement highlighted.
