STEVE McCLAREN is closing in on making Alex Bruce the next Rotherham United head coach.

The former manager is now calling the football shots at the Millers after being brought in as head of football this summer.

And one of his first big calls could be handing the manager’s job to the son of legend .

BBC Sheffield’s Rob Staton claimed Bruce, 41, is in the frame for the vacant post at the New York Stadium.

And the Rotherham Advertiser report that he is now the man McClaren wants to lead the club into their new era.

It would be an eye-catching move, with Bruce only leaving his coaching role at Salford City earlier this week.

The Ammies confirmed on June 22 that Bruce and fellow first-team coach Paul Gerrard had departed the club.

Bruce had been part of Karl Robinson’s backroom team before Robinson left his role as Salford boss earlier this month.

Now he could be set for a swift return to the dugout with a Rotherham side desperate to steady themselves after a miserable spell.

The Millers are looking for a fresh start after dropping into and turning to McClaren to help reshape the club.

The Rotherham statement read: “We would once again like to reassure supporters that this process can and has begun in the current absence of a head coach.

Whilst it is difficult to outline a definitive timeline, there is a high probability that players will begin to be announced on our official channels before the end of the week.”

Bruce has already had a taste of life in charge after a short spell managing Macclesfield.

The journeyman also enjoyed a 20-year playing career, coming through at Blackburn before spells at 13 clubs including Ipswich, Leeds, and Hull.
