A former Executive Vice chairman of Kaduna state Peace Commission, Dr. Priscilla Ankut, has called for alternative dispute resolution measures in conflict zones, especially by governments in the sustenance of peaceful coexistence.

According to her, alternative conflict resolution will end lengthy court process, uniting belligerent parties, save ives, while ensuring growth and development through peace and crisis management in the society.

She made the observation on Monday in Kaduna at a three-day workshop, with participants drawn from Katsina, Zamfara and Kaduna States, consisting mainly of civil society organizations, actors in justice departments, community heads, members of the press, and peace advocates, among others.

Ankut explained that the training organized by International Alert and SPRING in collaboration with UK International Development and TETRA TECH International Development, focused on building and strengthening capacities and skills of stakeholders in alternative dispute resolution, climate change resilience, early warning for conflicts, insecurity and communal frictions.

She hailed the efforts of Zamfara and Katsina Governments for enacting laws and establishing alternative dispute resolution and mediation centres, believing that the efforts of the two administrations in the North-West geopolitical zone will go a long way in ensuring sustainable peace, climate change resilience and assist in fighting insecurity at the grassroots.

The Programme Manager, International Alert Nigeria, Sunday Jimoh, explained the imperative of initiating conflict sensitive policies and strengthening state institutions saddled with responsibility of dispensing justice by building their skills and capacities.

He maintained that no price was too much in ensuring a peaceful society.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Zamfara State, represented by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Musa Garba said there is no better option than an alternative way of resolving dispute, pointing out that machineries of the state had been deployed in ensuring early warning for conflicts prevention and management.

The Director Citizens’ Rights and Head Mediation Centre, Katsina State Ministry of Justice, Abdur-Rahman Buhari, commended Governor Radda for assenting to the bill establishing an alternative dispute resolution centre, describing the development as a positive step.
