Brigadier General Usman Sani (retd) has shown his support for the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Benin Republic, emphasizing that this action is vital for safeguarding Nigeria's stability and national interests.

In an interview on the Channels Morning Brief, which was monitored by DAILY POST on Wednesday, the former army spokesman highlighted that Nigeria's security is intricately linked to events in its neighboring countries, particularly since the nation is surrounded by predominantly French-speaking states.

He remarked, “They say necessity is the mother of invention, and that is something you should consider when understanding the complexity of Nigerian society.

“In this context, we are geographically surrounded by other countries, most of which are French-speaking.”

He pointed out that even a slight crisis in any of these countries could have immediate repercussions for Nigeria, irrespective of population size or geographical boundaries.

According to him, the potential humanitarian fallout, which could include an influx of displaced individuals from Benin, might place a burden on Nigeria’s economy, border communities, and cross-border trade.

“Even a minor crisis in any of our neighboring countries can lead to direct consequences for Nigeria, ranging from humanitarian issues to economic and trade disruptions. That is why stabilizing democratic governance in Benin is not merely optional; it is essential.”

He argued that this situation makes it crucial for Nigeria to assist in stabilizing democratic governance in Benin, describing the intervention as a strategic necessity rather than a matter of convenience.

Sani urged the public to recognize the broader security implications for the region, stressing that Nigeria cannot overlook unrest in neighboring states.
