Former Director-General of the Labour Party’s Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council, Akin Osuntokun, has stated that conflicting court rulings and the internal political disputes within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are contributing to the decline of democracy in Nigeria.
During an interview on Arise Television, which was monitored by DAILY POST on Friday, Osuntokun cautioned that these problems pose a threat that exacerbates the country's shift towards a one-party dictatorship.
His remarks come as the PDP continues to move forward with its controversial national convention in Ibadan, despite existing court orders, factional conflicts, and escalating legal disputes.
Osuntokun emphasized that the greatest threat to the political system is not just the internal divisions within the PDP but also a judiciary that issues conflicting orders without considering their effects on democratic stability.
“Beyond the legal validity of their actions, judges bear the responsibility of contributing to the stability and development of society. It is essential to consider the implications of the judgments they render,” he remarked.
“You witness individuals delivering contradictory rulings, and you wonder how this is possible. These judges appear robotic. It is impossible to claim ignorance of the surrounding circumstances. Many of them may be found to have erred in their judgments,” he added.
