Lead is a type of metal, and is found in both the earth’s soil and rocks, as well as air and water.

It is used in a wide variety of items, including batteries, electronic equipment, x-rays and ceramics.

Lead was previously used in paint, petrol, food cans and water pipes, however these uses of the substance have been phased out.

Exposure to high levels of lead in a short time can lead to a variety of symptoms including an upset stomach, mood changes, poor attention span, headaches, hallucinations and damage to the brain and kidneys in severe cases.

Periodic exposure to lower levels of lead over a long time can cause anaemia and high blood pressure, damage to the nervous system, brain and kidneys as well as effects on male and female reproduction.

Eating food or drink, or breathing in air contaminated with lead or its compounds does not generally cause any effects if for a short period of time.

Young children and pregnant women are the most sensitive and at risk to the effects of lead.

As a result the product does not meet the requirements of the REACH Enforcement Regulations 2008.

Shoppers have been warned to stop using the items immediately and return them to their nearest Primark store for a full refund.

If you have any concerns regarding exposure to lead, contact your GP or NHS 111.

Customers can also consult the retailer’s website for any further questions.
