The Federal Government has stated that the ongoing consumption of hides and skins, commonly referred to as ponmo, poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s leather industry, which is currently valued at approximately $5 billion.
The Director-General of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council, Prof. Nnanyelugo Ikemounso, made this announcement during the National Campaign Against the Consumption of ponmo held on Thursday in Abuja.
Prof. Ikemounso emphasized that this practice deprives local industries of essential raw materials necessary for leather production and export.
He noted that the Nigerian leather goods market was valued at $2.79 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow to $4.96 billion by 2033, warning that the ongoing diversion of hides for consumption could hinder this growth.
“From an economic and industrial perspective, cowhides represent one of Nigeria’s most valuable raw materials. Our country has a dynamic leather industry with significant potential for job creation, foreign exchange earnings, and contributions to GDP,” he stated.
“As of 2024, the Nigerian Leather Goods Market was valued at USD 2.79 billion, with projections to reach USD 4.96 billion by 2033.”
“Unfortunately, the continuous diversion of hides for ponmo consumption denies our industries access to quality raw materials, undermines our tanning and leather manufacturing sector, and reduces Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global leather market,” he added.
Ikemounso further elaborated that the global leather value chain is estimated to be worth between $420 billion and $1 trillion, and with proper policy direction, infrastructure, and availability of raw materials, Nigeria could significantly enhance its share of that market.
He stressed that the campaign is not intended to undermine cultural or dietary preferences but rather to ensure that hides and skins are directed towards productive industrial use for the benefit of the nation.
