Worried by renewed attacks by suspected Fulani militias which have led to the death of hundreds of people, the Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, Amalau Samuel Amalau, has called on the state government and security agencies to put up measures to halt the wave of killings.
Amalau, who made the call in a statement on Wednesday, condemned what he described as coordinated and brazen attacks on communities in the council, especially in Mushere Chiefdom, stressing that they were barbaric, inhuman, and a direct threat to peace and coexistence.
Citing a fresh attack on Sunday where a widow was killed while several homes, farmlands and properties were destroyed, Amalau said such violence was uncalled for.
According to witnesses, over 500 armed Fulani militias descended on the community in a coordinated onslaught, resulting in widespread destruction of lives and property.
While speaking on the assault, Amalau expressed deep concern and sorrow over the recurring attacks, lamenting the loss of innocent lives and the growing sense of fear and displacement among residents.
“This is not just an attack on Mushere, it is an attack on the soul of Bokkos,” the chairman stated. “We cannot continue to watch our people be slaughtered and their livelihoods destroyed in broad daylight. Enough is enough.”
He also called on security agencies including the Nigerian Army, Police, Civil Defence and community-based security operatives, to act decisively in neutralizing the threats posed by these criminal militias.
He also emphasized the need for intelligence gathering, rapid response and deployment of more personnel to vulnerable areas to forestall further attacks.
