German qualifier Merk, who achieved checkouts of 122 and 104, sealed his victory with a double six, advancing to round three in his debut appearance in this event.

Snakebite, 55, managed to win only two legs across three sets and missed 13 double attempts in a disappointing display.

This performance followed his confident declaration that he would win the Sid Waddell Trophy for the third time in January.

The Scotsman made the unusual choice to change his darts while on a score of 384 before his third visit to the oche in leg three of set two.

Although he is known as the Tinkerman of darts and frequently alters his equipment, this was an atypical strategy.

Most players would hesitate to make such a change on the Ally Pally stage, or at least wait for a television break.

Wright, who entered to Band Aid’s "Do They Know It’s Christmas?", had a poor start, averaging just 78.56 for the first set and improving slightly to 83.56 for set two.

As he exited in the second round for the second time in three tournaments, he concluded with an average of only 71.47 for set three.

It was disheartening to witness a player of his caliber struggle so significantly. Unfortunately, he has had a very challenging year and is likely to drop out of the top 32 by the end of the World Championship.

This also means he will not face Michael van Gerwen, who is set to compete against Irishman William O’Connor later, a player he has previously met in two World finals.

Wright attempted to change his darts, but it ultimately did not benefit him against Merk.
