The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has urged for a declaration of a national emergency regarding workers’ welfare and youth unemployment.
Obi made this statement on his verified X account on Wednesday.
He noted that the wages of Nigerian workers have become severely insufficient to maintain even a basic standard of living.
The former governor of Anambra state emphasized that earnings are no longer enough to cover essential needs such as food, housing, transportation, education, electricity, water, and healthcare.
“I read with concern the statement from Nigerian workers, represented by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), expressing their distress over the serious survival challenges facing workers in the country today.
“If those who are employed are struggling to make ends meet, one must ask: what is the situation for the over 80 million Nigerian youths in their productive years who are unemployed, lacking stable means of livelihood, and increasingly susceptible to social vices?
“This situation necessitates immediate action. Nigeria must declare a national emergency on the welfare of its citizens, particularly the unemployed, the impoverished, and the marginalized, so that their energy and potential can be effectively utilized for productive and nation-building efforts,” he stated.
