PENGASSAN President Osifo Clarifies Why Nationwide Strike Against Dangote Refinery Was Suspended

The President of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, Festus Osifo, has clarified that the union decided to suspend its nationwide industrial action against Dangote Refinery out of respect for the Nigerian government and its citizens.

He provided this explanation during a press conference on Wednesday.

However, the Association expressed its dissatisfaction with the agreement reached with Dangote Refinery.

“We are unhappy with the terms of the agreement as it did not address our main demand for the reinstatement of the 800 dismissed Nigerian workers. Nevertheless, in deference to government institutions, the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Chief Reconciliator of the Federation, and the ministers who worked diligently into the early hours to mediate, we chose to suspend the action,” he remarked.

Osifo further cautioned: “If Dangote does not fulfill its obligations, we will resume our action immediately, without any prior notice.”

This development follows reports from DAILY POST about the two-day strike that occurred after the Federal Government's intervention.

Part of the agreement stipulates that Dangote Refinery would reinstate the terminated workers, which was the fundamental reason for the strike.

It is worth noting that gas and crude supplies were halted from Dangote Refinery after PENGASSAN initiated the strike on Sunday.

This action impacted the refinery's capacity of 650,000 barrels per day and affected Nigeria’s oil downstream sector, leading to intervention from the Federal Government via the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
