A sense of relief enveloped Niger State as the most recent group of 130 remaining kidnapped schoolchildren and teachers from St Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area, were liberated from captivity.
The freed children, who had been held by their captors for nearly a month, were primarily younger students compared to the initial 100 rescued and officially returned to Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
The abductees, who arrived in six buses, were warmly welcomed by Governor Bago and other senior government officials during a brief ceremony at Government House in Minna, thus concluding weeks of uncertainty and distress regarding their situation.
During a conversation with some teachers, who were visibly overjoyed, they expressed their gratitude to God, the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, Rev Dr Bulus Yohanna, government authorities, and security agencies for their roles in ensuring their safe return.
One teacher, who preferred to remain anonymous, stated, “All I can say now is that God has listened to our prayers, and I know everyone has been praying for us as well.”
“We kept praying that God would assist us in reuniting with our families and celebrating Christmas with them.”
Another teacher lamented the kidnapping of the schoolchildren, particularly the younger students.
“Some of these children are far too young to be abducted, but we are grateful to be back alive,” he remarked.
The latest release increases the total number of rescued students to 230.
It is important to note that a total of 315 students, including 12 teachers, were kidnapped on Friday, November 21, 2025, as reported by Bishop Bulus Yohanna at that time.
He mentioned that of this group, 50 managed to escape and reunite with their families on Sunday, November 22, 2025, leaving 265 still in captivity.
