A strange disease has reportedly struck Mbutu Community in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area, LGA, of Imo State, killing about six pupils and forcing the local authorities to shut down all public and private schools for seven days.
The community, which comprises four Autonomous towns, Mbutu Ancient Kingdom, Mbutu Nweorie, Mbutu Ukwu and Nwenkwo are now living in fear as the disease spreads.
The Chairman of the LGA, Iheukwumere Henry Alaribe informed newsmen that the decision to shut down schools was aimed at curtailing the spread of the disease and saving the lives of children.
He said six children between one and six years have lost their lives in less than seven days.
The Council boss, in a press statement, said the World Health Organisation, WHO, the Department of Disease Prevention and Control in the State Ministry of Health, and the health staff from the council are actively working to investigate the unusual disease.
He said plans were underway to collaborate with the state government and relevant agencies to contain the outbreak and ensure the well-being of citizens.
“In light of this outbreak, parents who have not yet vaccinated their children are strongly advised to do so,
”;Vaccinations are essential for preventing the spread of disease and protecting our children’s health,”; the statement said.
Alaribe urged the people of the area to remain calm and cooperate with the relevant authorities as efforts by the medical authorities were working to curtail the outbreak.
