The miniseries based on the life of fashion designer Halston premiered this week on Netflix. Halston is based on the novel Simply Halston by Steven Gaines that chronicles the life of the designer.
Ewan McGregor portrays the designer and looks fantastic in this role, and serves as an executive producer for the limited series. Other recognizable names in fashion and entertainment are included in the series, director Joel Schumacher (Rory Culkin), designer Elsa Peretti (Rebecca Dayan), fashion illustrator Joe Eula (David Pittu), actress and singer Liza Minnelli (Krysta Rodriguez) and artist and Halston’s partner Victor Hugo (Gian Franco Rodriguez).
Halston was a fashion icon who had his heyday in the 70s and 80s. The series takes a deep dive into his life and career. Director Ryan Murphy shared an awesome slide show of photos on his IG with all the actors in character.
The trailer below shows that we are in for a wild ride with this one.
Another new Netflix series that was added this week is The Upshaws. This sitcom, created by Wanda Sykes and Regina Y. Hicks, follows the blended Upshaw family in a series that is reminiscent of the sitcoms of the 90s.
Bennie Upshaw (Mike Epps) is the patriarch of the family that consists of his wife Regina (Kim Fields), two young daughters (Khali Daniya-Renee Spraggins, Journey Christine) and firstborn son (Jermelle Simon) and the teenage son (Diamond Lyons) he fathered with another woman (Gabrielle Dennis). Wanda Sykes plays Bennie’s sister-in-law, and she isn’t fond of Bennie, but she did partner with him to buy his business, Bennie’s Garage.
Even though the tone of the series is a throwback to sitcoms of the 90s, the overall feel is fresher with a modern feel. Netflix viewers are enjoying it so much that it is already sitting at number one on the Netflix top ten tv shows list.
Recently the drama series StartUp was released on Netflix. The series consists of three seasons, 10 episodes each, and originally aired on Crackle.
Described as a gritty drama, Startup devels into the digital currency world when an unlikely trio of strangers decides to invest in GenCoin. When a crooked FBI agent makes it her mission to take them down, the story becomes fascinating.
The cast is impressive and includes Adam Brody, Edi Gathegi, Otmara Marrero, Martin Freeman, Ron Perlman, Addison Timlin and Mira Sorvino.
The fourth and final season of Castlevania was released this week. This series is one of the adult animated shows on Netflix and is based on a Japanese video game developed by Konami.

Castlevania has a dark fantasy theme that revolves around the last member of the Belmont Clan, Trevor Belmont (Richard Armitage), who is trying to save Eastern Europe from Vlad Dracula Tepes (Graham McTavish). Belmont and his group of misfits must fight Dracula and his vampires to save humanity.
The actors lending their voices to the series is impressive.
