Happy Shadow and Bone day! The latest fantasy/sci-fi series has officially hit Netflix, and this one has a huge fanbase already as an adaptation of a YA book of the same name written by Leigh Bardugo. Expect a ton of adventure, action, and of course, romance from this exciting new show.
Needless to say if you’ve checked out the trailer or promotional images, Shadow and Bone features a few heartthrobs from the likes of Archie Renaux playing Malyen “Mal” Oretsev and Calahan Skogman as Matthias Helvar, but the actor most fans have their eyes on is Ben Barnes.
Warning: Spoilers for Shadow and Bone season 1 ahead.
Barnes portrays General Kirigan in Shadow and Bone, who fans of the book know isn’t exactly the best choice in a love interest. Although he’s certainly handsome and smooth-talking, it’s revealed during the show that he doesn’t have the best intentions. In reality, he only thinks of himself and uses people as a means to his own endgame.
Unfortunately for protagonist Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), she does fall for the Shadow Summoner after she discovers that she’s actually the Sun Summoner and the two can potentially save the world together. Romantic, right? Well…
Who does Alina end up with in Shadow and Bone?
As we’re introduced to at the start of the show, Alina and Mal are the best of friends who are totally in love but just don’t know it yet. They grew up together at an orphanage and bonded over anything and everything, making their connection unbeatable. But when Alina is forced to go to the capital after it’s revealed she’s Grisha, her communication with Mal ends. The two deal with their new reality separately, which basically throws a wrench in the possibility they could end up together.
Well, what throws an even bigger wrench into Alina’s life is when Baghra reveals to her that Kirigan is actually The Darkling, a.k.a. the person who created the Fold. The series explains that he made it as an act of rage to use against his enemies, but ultimately created all new horrors and dangerous creatures called the Volcra in the process.
Despite Kirigan’s attractiveness, this is obviously a big no-no for Alina and she ditches her romantic feelings for him. In the end, she’s reunited with Mal, and though they do not exactly define their relationship, they might not have to. After everything the two go through, they’ve formed an even closer bond by the end of Shadow and Bone. They don’t have a grand kissing scene or anything like that, but it’s kind of implied they could become an item very soon if they’re not already.
What episode do Alina and Kirigan kiss in?
Speaking of kissing, Alina and Kirigan do lock lips twice in Shadow and Bone, and in one instance it does start to get hot and heavy. Before they can get intimate, however, there’s a knock on the door that stops them. If you’re curious as to what episode their steamy moment takes place in, I’m not judging! You can see the two get their smooch on in episode 5, titled “Show Me Who You Are.”
So Kirigan is the bad guy and Alina is seemingly with Mal in the end. We’ll have to wait and see what the status of their relationship is if and when Shadow and Bone season 2 debuts on Netflix. As of right now, a second season hasn’t been confirmed by the streaming service, though there have been rumors. We’ll keep you updated once we get more information!Next: Shadow and Bone cast: Who is in the Netflix show?
