Morbius has been a very highly anticipated title Marvel fans have been very excited to see, and ever since the news came out about the deal between Sony and Netflix, many subscribers are wondering when the film will be available on the streaming service.
For those that aren’t familiar, Morbius or Morbius The Living Vampire was created by Roy Thomas and originally designed by Gil Kane, first appearing for the first time as a Spider-Man villain in The Amazing Spider-Man #101 in October 1970. The flawed antihero hasn’t been in much outside the comics with the exception of a memorable run as a recurring character on the legendary 1994 Spider-Man: The Animated Series and also was featured in a deleted scene found on the DVD of the 1998 live-action Blade film starring Wesley Snipes, but now that is about to change, now that the Morbius film from Sony is on the way.
Dr. Michael Morbius, Ph.D., M.D. was a biochemist who attempted to cure his rare blood disease with a biochemical experiment. But like most origin stories coming from the comics, things did not go the way he planned, and he inadvertently gave himself pseudo-vampiric abilities that made him superhuman.
After announcing a shared universe featuring villains of Spider-Man starting off with Tom Hardy’s Venom film in 2018, several other titles were announced, including Morbius. The feature will star Jared Leto in the titular role, who is no stranger to these types of roles starring in such comic book-related flicks as Suicide Squad and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and many fans are eager to know everything they can about his foray into the world of Marvel.
Morbius release date
The Morbius film was initially scheduled to release on July 10, 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the premiere to delay to July 31, 2020, followed by a move to March 19, 2020, and then again to Oct. 8, 2021. Now the new release date for the Sony movie is Jan. 21, 2022.
As far as when the motion picture will be on Netflix, the deal states that starting in 2022, titles like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, Uncharted, and Morbius will all go directly to the streaming powerhouse’s library after its home entertainment window closes, which, according to outlets like The Hollywood Reporter, is often 18 months after the flick has its theatrical release. So there is no mystery as to where these endeavors will call their streaming home.
Alongside Leto in Morbius stands a very impressive cast full of familiar faces. The Sony Marvel film stars 6 Underground’s Adria Arjona, Chernobyl’s Jared Harris, The Daily Show’s Al Madrigal, Fast 9’s Tyrese Gibson, and Dr. Who’s Matt Smith.
Michael Keaton will also be in the superhero sci-fi action film. However, it hasn’t been confirmed if he will be reprising his role as Adrian Toomes, aka Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming. With signs pointing to a multiverse aka Spider-Verse coming in Spider-Man: No Way Home allowing any and all previous Spider-related installments to collide, it is anyone’s guess who the former Batman actor is playing in Morbius.
Mahershala Ali will be playing Blade in an upcoming solo film in the MCU, but given these types of film’s history of surprising fans with unexpected cameos and the history the two characters have in the source material, it would be pretty cool if he showed up in a post-credits scene or just made a small cameo. In January 2021, Leto did mention there was potential that the two heroes could collide at some point down the line, and it could just be wishful thinking, but maybe this was a hint of a surprise moment the fans should look out for. Fans will have to wait and see when Morbius comes out in theaters, then on Netflix.
