Netflix’s critically acclaimed thriller Mindhunter ran for two fantastic seasons before taking what seemed to be an indefinite break. But now that there have been reports the David Fincher-produced series could be coming back for a third installment, let’s get into that possibility. Is this merely a rumor, or should we expect to see Jonathan Groff back on our screens to take on the role of FBI agent Holden Ford?
But first, the basics of Mindhunter.
How many seasons of Mindhunter are there?
Currently, there are two seasons of Mindhunter. The show debuted on Netflix in October 2017, with the second installment coming out in August 2019. Both seasons were received well, with the first landing actor Cameron Britton (who played real-life serial killer Edmund Kemper) an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, and the second receiving an Emmy nom for the show’s cinematography.
If Mindhunter season 3 were to happen, we’re sure it would do just as well with critics given its strong writing, acting, and cinematography.
Is there going to be a season 3 of Mindhunter?
After reports in early 2020 claimed that Mindhunter season 3 likely wouldn’t happen, David Fincher himself spoke out on the show’s fate. According to Vulture in October 2020, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker explained that working on the show “was a lot for [him].” While reflecting on his process for season 2, he also shared:
“It’s a 90-hour workweek. It absorbs everything in your life. When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, ‘I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three.'”
Fincher also made it a point to stress how expensive the show was to make. But despite his hesitation, rumors began circulating recently that perhaps Mindhunter season 3 could be in the works sometime soon after all. A site called Small Screen shared the following quote from a source:
“All I can really tell you about Mindhunter is that conversations between Netflix and Fincher are ongoing. They are discussing the possibility of bringing the show back for a third season.”
At this point, Mindhunter season 3 is not officially confirmed by Netflix, so we’ll have to wait and see if it’s really happening or not.
When is Mindhunter season 3 filming?
To our knowledge, Fincher and his team are not currently working on Mindhunter season 3. Considering it doesn’t seem there’s a definitive answer as to whether or not the show will go on, we cannot predict when filming could start. However, we’ll keep you updated if and once we get any information regarding production.
Currently, it looks like two of Fincher’s projects are in pre-production–Lange and Chinatown, both of which he serves as producer on. If Mindhunter season 3 is confirmed, we’re betting Fincher would have to finish work on these two titles before getting started on the Netflix show.
Mindhunter season 3 release date
Since Mindhunter season 3 has not been announced, don’t expect it to debut on Netflix anytime soon, even if it does get the green light sometime in the future.
