Netflix, the king of teen programming, has been laying the groundwork to be a formidable force in the young adult media market for years. While their specialties tends to err on the side of romances, coming-of-age stories, and crime dramas, the streamer seems to be looking to find a foothold in the horror genre as well. Their acquisition of the rights to Image Comics Shadecraft is a recent example of this effort.
There are currently four teen horror movies and series set to make a land on Netflix in the not too distant future.
- The Fear Street movie trilogy based on the books by R.L. Stine
- There’s Someone Inside Your House, a film adapted from the novel by Stephanie Perkins
- The Midnight Club series with The Haunting creator Mike Flanagan tapped as showrunner for the adaptation of Christopher Pike’s young adult book.
- Shadecraft, the Netflix iteration of the recently published comic
Shadecraft is unique in that its acquisition happened prior to the comic’s first issue release on March 31, 2021. The comic is the brainchild of Lucifer showrunner Joe Henderson and artist Lee Garbett.
Shadecraft release date
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Henderson is set to co-write the pilot of the series with Georgia Lee, a writer-producer known for her work on The 100 and The Expanse. The two will also serve as executive producers of the series with Garbett attached as a producer.
Shadecraft follows the story of 16-year-old Zadie Lu whose typical teenage struggles, which include navigating high school, are exacerbated by the shadows coming to life around her. Not only are the shadows watching her, they’re attempting to kill her. Her own shadow is trying to protect her, but if Zadie doesn’t get a handle on this, she could lose her life.
Per The Mary Sue, Zadie’s abilities could grant her immeasurable power if she can find out how this is all connected to her family. However, she’ll have to brave enough to take the power for herself if she ever wants to stop living in fear.
Outside of the initial announcement of the show’s development at Netflix, there’s been no word on whether season one will make its debut in 2021. We’ll keep you posted on more Shadecraft news as it rolls in.Next: Lucifer season 6 release updates
