Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has criticized United States President Donald Trump for his recent threat to initiate military action in Nigeria, purportedly to safeguard Christians in the country.
In a post shared on X on Sunday, Sowore cautioned Nigerians against celebrating such rhetoric, stating that foreign intervention has never resulted in peace for any nation.
“The recent threat by U.S. President Donald Trump to launch military action in Nigeria, allegedly to protect Christians, may seem appealing to some. However, history has demonstrated that this can be dangerous,” Sowore wrote.
He urged Nigerians, regardless of their faith, to reject the notion of foreign interference, emphasizing that America’s previous military interventions have only exacerbated instability in the affected countries.
“The United States and its allies have a long history of military interventions that leave nations more unstable than they were before. They failed to achieve peace in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, or Syria, and they will not bring salvation to Nigeria through bombs or troops on the ground,” he stated.
According to Sowore, Nigeria does not require assistance from outside but rather authentic leadership that can protect its citizens and foster a just society.
“What Nigeria genuinely needs is not a foreign savior, but legitimate, accountable leadership that protects all citizens, upholds justice, and puts an end to the cycles of corruption and violence that have left the nation in disarray,” he added.
Sowore also criticized the political elite, asserting that true change will not come from leaders like President Bola Tinubu.
“Trump does not care about Nigerians, whether they are Christians, Muslims, or anyone else. Our salvation will never come from abroad; it must arise from within, through real leadership, not the Tinubus of this world, and a national renewal,” he concluded.
