The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has passed into law an executive bill seeking the disbandment and delisting of Amasiri Development Centre as one of the 64 development centers in the state, following a recent attack on Okporojo village in Oso-Edda Community, Edda LGA, by Amasiri warlords.

Amasiri community falls under Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The incident has also led to the removal of all government political appointees from the area.

The passage of the bill, which reduces the number of development centers in the state to 63 and that of Afikpo Local Government to four, was one of the outcomes of the plenary of the State House of Assembly, which took place at the Legislative Complex in Abakaliki on Tuesday.

The law is deemed to come into force on 3rd February 2026.

Commenting shortly after the exhaustive deliberation of the House, the Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chief Moses Odunwa, who earlier condemned the dastardly attack on Okporojo people, said the State House of Assembly strongly supports Governor Francis Nwifuru’s decision to expunge Amasiri DC as one of the Development Centres in the state, describing the governor’s action as proactive and corrective.

According to the Speaker, the attack on Okporojo people was unwarranted, given the peaceful disposition of the Chief Servant of the state. He prayed for the eternal repose of the deceased and urged Okporojo people to remain calm and law-abiding while the state works to bring lasting peace to the area.

In their remarks, some members of the House, including the member representing Ebonyi North East, Hon. Aloysius Nwodo; the representative of Izzi West State Constituency, Chief Godwin Abiri; Hon. Ifeanyi Nwakpu representing Ikwo North; Hon. Innocent Chikaodili Nomeh representing Ezza North West; and his Ezza South counterpart, Hon. Friday Ogbuewu, described the attack as barbaric, senseless, regrettable, and unfortunate, strongly condemning the act.

They also pledged support for the dissolution of the DC and other facilities in the area by the government and appealed to law enforcement agencies deployed to the area to remain vigilant in carrying out their duties.

Other members who contributed included Hon. Lucas Chukwu, representing Ishielu South State Constituency, and Hon. Charles Nkwoemezie of Onicha West State Constituency.

They commended the governor for his timely interventions in restoring peace to the warring areas, stating that no price is too high for peace, and urged the Amasiri people to demonstrate true repentance rather than staging protests.

The House thereafter received and adopted local government reports as presented by the House Committee Chairman on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Goodluck Obinna Mbam.
