Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has cautioned public officeholders that their oath of office is not a mere formality, warning that they will be held accountable for the responsibilities entrusted to them.

He issued the warning while speaking at a two-day sensitisation workshop organised by the Jigawa State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (JSPCACC) for 27 local government officials, held on Wednesday.

The workshop was themed “A New Chapter of Excellent Service: Integrity and Accountability, Protection of Public Trust and the Role of Local Governments in Implementing JSPCACC’s Mandate.”

The governor said the theme was timely and would go a long way in sensitising senior officials from local government councils to the commission’s core responsibilities and related governance issues, reinforcing the state’s commitment to integrity and accountability.

According to him, “The oath we have sworn serves as a performance bond committing us to safeguard their resources, address their needs, and uphold their trust as a sacred obligation.”

He noted that true development begins at the grassroots and must be built on the bedrock of integrity and accountability.

“Your oath of office is not merely ceremonial; it stands as a binding commitment for which you will answer both to the people and before God. Public expenditure and financial management must be approached with diligence and strict adherence to due process.”

Earlier, the chairman of JSPCACC, Barrister Salisu Abdu, said the two-day workshop was organised for local government officials to support local administration in operating with integrity.

“We are here to ensure that every council chairman, secretary, DAGs and treasurer understands the legal boundaries of their office,” he said.

He urged any citizen who feels cheated by a local administrative decision to channel their complaints to the Commission to seek justice at no cost.

He also commended Governor Umar Namadi for giving the commission the independence to carry out its work without fear or favour.
