Four days after the promised restoration date, four out of the six states in Nigeria’s North-East geopolitical zone remain in total darkness due to the alleged failure of the Yola Electricity Distribution Company, YEDC, to fulfil its commitment.
The hopes of residents in Adamawa, Yobe, Borno, and Taraba states were once again dashed following yet another unkept promise by YEDC to restore electricity.
It will be recalled that the company had earlier pledged to return power to the affected areas by 5 pm on Saturday, June 14, 2025. However, as of the time of this report, the situation remains unchanged, with a widespread blackout continuing across the region.
In its last official communication, YEDC had explained that the outage was necessary to allow the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, to carry out critical upgrade works on the JosâGombe 330kV and JosâBauchiâGombe 132kV transmission lines.
The project reportedly includes the installation of new towers at the Bauchi 330kV station and the rerouting of an existing 132kV line.
Frustrated by yet another missed deadline, residents expressed anger and disappointment over the persistent outage, which they say has paralysed daily life and economic activity.
Speaking with DAILY POST, some residents lamented the severe impact on businesses, noting that the blackout has led to a sharp increase in the cost of goods and services.
While many questioned YEDC’s competence, others are urging the federal government to urgently intervene.
Some residents who spoke with DAILY POST in Taraba called for the replacement of the distribution company with a more capable operator, insisting that the region deserves reliable electricity to support its development and livelihood.
