The Ogun State Government has denied rumours that the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun has been renamed.
In a statement issued on Thursday by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser
Media and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun.
According to the statement, the government said the university’s name remains unchanged, and there are no plans to rename it as Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona University of Education, contrary to recent reports.
The clarification came after speculation online suggested that the institution had been renamed in honour of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona.
“Tai Solarin University of Education has not been renamed. Governor Dapo Abiodun only referred to previous efforts made to honour the late monarch. He did not announce a name change for TASUED.”
“The state government already honoured the late monarch in 2022 by naming the Sikiru Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology in Omu after him.”
The government also shared a brief history of TASUED, noting that the Ogun State College of Education, established in 1977, was renamed Tai Solarin College of Education in 1994, and later became Tai Solarin University of Education in 2005.
This change led to confusion with the National Universities Commission (NUC) over the university’s ability to offer both NCE and degree programmes.
To resolve this, the Tai Solarin College of Education was relocated to Omu, and the Tai Solarin University of Education remained in Ijagun under its current name.
The state government noted that TASUED is now under federal government jurisdiction, and therefore, any renaming would not be within the powers of the state alone.
“The governor only restated what had already been done in honour of Oba Sikiru Adetona. There was no announcement about renaming TASUED,” the statement added.
