Nigeria's non-oil exports have increased by 25.75 percent to $1.79 billion in the first quarter of 2025, driven by the global demand for sesame seeds.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, Nonye Ayeni, shared this information at an event for sesame seed farmers on Thursday.
Ayeni, representing Chika Sylvia, the Chief Trade Promotion Officer of the council, stated that this increase is a rise from 19.59 percent recorded in the first quarter of 2024.
She highlighted that in 2024, sesame seeds ranked third among the top 20 export products, totaling 337.8258 metric tonnes, which accounted for 4.63 percent of the total quantity exported.
According to her, Nigeria stands to gain substantial foreign exchange earnings from sesame seed exports.
"Nigeria can secure a significant portion of the vast foreign exchange from sesame seed exports in the global market," she remarked.
