The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has responded to the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, as the Chairman of the Independent National Election Commission (INEC).

The coalition of political parties in the country emphasized that this moment is critical for the nation’s electoral process.

Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, has been appointed as the INEC chairman, succeeding Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who stepped down after approximately ten years of service.

"This is a well-deserved appointment in the citizens’ pursuit of sustainable democracy and development," stated a message signed by
Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, IPAC National Chairman.

"As a person of integrity, a distinguished academic, an astute administrator, and a legal expert, it is anticipated that Prof. Amupitan will leverage his extensive experience in fulfilling this vital national role," it continued.

"Nigerians are looking forward to an independent electoral body and reforms that will strengthen, deepen, and enhance the democratic system; free, fair, credible, transparent, and inclusive elections that promote national unity, political stability, and prosperity; rebuild trust in the electoral process; and uphold the integrity of the ballot box, ensuring that every vote is counted and respected by all stakeholders."

"These objectives align with IPAC's vision and mandate to deepen our democracy, create an environment conducive to successful elections, political stability, and the overall well-being of Nigerians."

"As the umbrella organization for all registered political parties in Nigeria, IPAC will work collaboratively with the new leadership of INEC and key stakeholders to enhance the credibility and integrity of the nation’s electoral process and to strengthen democratic institutions and governance."

IPAC urged Prof. Amupitan to fulfill his constitutional duties impartially and earn the trust that Nigerians have placed in him, reminding him that "To whom much is given, much is expected."

"The true test of his leadership will be the Anambra State governorship election on November 8, 2025. INEC must maintain neutrality as an arbiter and ensure the process is fair, transparent, and inclusive. The success of this off-cycle election will set the tone for what citizens can anticipate in the 2026 Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections, as well as the gubernatorial elections in Osun and Ekiti States, and the critical 2027 general election. The importance of patriotism, excellence, transparency, integrity, security, and accountability cannot be overstated," it concluded.

IPAC expressed its commitment to supporting INEC, stakeholders, and fellow citizens in building a robust, united, stable, prosperous, and inclusive democratic nation.
