Nigerian comedian Seyi Law has expressed his worries regarding the escalating economic difficulties in the country, urging leaders to recognize the challenges faced by everyday citizens.
In an interview on the Inside The Box podcast, the comedian highlighted that the increasing frustration among Nigerians is primarily driven by hunger and the surging cost of living.
He emphasized that government officials must be candid about the hardships arising from ongoing economic reforms, rather than minimizing the situation.
“Nigerians are hungry, and hungry people are angry people. I feel the pain too. I dislike when we attempt to sweep such issues under the rug, which is often what politicians do. I find it unacceptable.
“Let us acknowledge the people's suffering and inform them that these reforms will come with pain, but hopefully, there will be relief at the end,” he stated.
Seyi Law also recounted his personal experience with the economic decline, revealing how the depreciation of the naira has significantly impacted his family's finances.
He shared that supporting his wife and children, who reside in the United Kingdom, has become considerably more expensive due to the high exchange rate.
“My family has been in the UK since 2019. For every naira that I convert to pounds, it costs me N2000. This is not what it used to cost me. It means that if I was spending N2m before, I now have to spend N5m, which brings its own hardships,” Seyi explained.
Nevertheless, the comedian expressed hope that the current challenges will ultimately lead to positive outcomes if leaders continue to be transparent and compassionate towards the people's struggles.
