The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has clarified the age controversies surrounding admissions in Nigerian education.

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, the Minister was asked about the age controversies.

This followed reports making the rounds that the admission age into secondary schools is now 12 years.

“The admission age into JSS is 10 years, it’s not 12 years,” he said.

On the age for admission into universities, he added, “University remains 16 years. It’s not 12 years. That was fake and malicious news that was sent out and the Ministry of Education quickly sent a clarifying question to that. To get admitted from primary six to GSS 1 is 10 years. Universities remain 16 years; that’s settled.”

Asked if there was a move to balance the entrance period in all institutions, he answered in the affirmative.
