The Chairman Niger State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Abu Nmodu has advised the Commissioner of Police to be cautious of politicians, warning that they often prioritize self-interest over genuine concerns.
The Chairman stated this during a courtesy visit by the state Commissioner of Police, CP, Adamu Abdullahi Elleman the NUJ chairman cautioned that politicians tend to value individuals only when they need something and discard them when they’re no longer useful.
“They (political) only do something when they want something. You are only valuable only when they need something. When you cannot add value, they will forget you. As a journalist if you don’t have a platform, you cease to be useful to them, he insisted.
The NUJ chairman drew a parallel between politicians and journalists, stating that without a platform, a journalist’s usefulness is diminished.
According to him, the advice was given to serve as a reminder to the CP to remain vigilant and prioritize the rule of law amidst potential manipulation by politicians while assuring him of the readiness of the Union to partner with.command in the fight against crimes.
Earlier, CP Elleman expressed his desire to strengthen collaboration with the Niger State chapter of the NUJ, recognizing their crucial role in communicating public concerns to the government.
He stated, “I love Journalists not just because they are the ears and eyes of the masses, but because they inform the world about pressing issues.”;;
He encouraged NUJ members to share their observations and advice, promising to take their input in policing and governance seriously.
The CP emphasized his commitment to upholding human rights and protecting citizens, rather than using power against them.
Elleman also pledged to remain neutral in political matters, ensuring that policing under his command does not favor any political group.
While thanking the state chairman for the warm reception, he called on journalists to help create a conducive atmosphere for governance and business, highlighting the importance of their role in police-community relations.
