The Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer was a massively popular series in the 2000s. The 4 books series follows the romance between a vampire and a teenage girl in a small town in the US from the point of view of the girl, Bella. It gathered a huge fan following and all the books in the series had movie adaptations.
Now the author is releasing a new book from the perspective of Bella’s vampire love interest, Edward. Titled ‘Midnight Sun’, the book will retell the tale of the first book this time from another perspective. It will be much thicker than Bella’s version, which makes sense, for while avoiding her he traveled and did things which sounded more exciting than attending school and managing friends like Bella did.
Meyer first had the idea for this book in the 2000’s and discussed it with her publisher, sending a draft of the first few chapters she had written. Those chapters got leaked online in 2008 and went viral amongst her fans. She was upset by the incident and went saying “was a huge violation of my rights as an author, not to mention me as a human being.”
“I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun,” she went on to say, “and so it is on hold indefinitely.”
Now 12 years after that, the book is finally complete and going to be released. Meyer posted on her website, “I hope this announcement doesn’t seem ill-timed; I really considered delaying the release until the world was back to normal. However, 1) who knows when that will be? And 2) you guys have waited long enough. Much longer than long enough, actually.
I don’t know how everyone else is coping, but right now books are my main solace and happiest escape. Personally, I would be nothing but delighted if one of my favorite authors announced something new for me to read. (No pressure, Laini Taylor.) So, I hope this announcement gave you some pleasure and something fun to look forward to.”
She is doing a small semi-virtual book tour which she warns might change depending on the Covid situation.
