The Archbishop of Living Christ Mission and Chancellor, Hezekiah University, Most Rev. Daddy Hezekiah, has appealed to the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government to reconsider the enforcement of the new tax policy, stating that it amounts to more than double taxation and will deepen the sufferings and hardship encountered by the masses.
Bishop Hezekiah made the appeal in Owerri after receiving the Imo Broadcasting Corporation Special Recognition Award, held at the corporation’s Events Centre along Akanchawa Road, New Owerri.
Represented at the occasion by the Deputy Chairman, Board of Trustees of Hezekiah University, the man of God said that the Federal Government should have concentrated on how to fight insecurity, corruption, injustice, kidnappings, hardship, and other social ills instead of taxing people amid economic hardship.
He added that the new policy, if implemented, may affect the banking industry, as many people may be reluctant to put their money in banks.
“Also, it is in the best interest of the Government to always practice transparency in all it does. For example, people should know how these loans obtained from foreign governments are used.
“I also plead with the Government to ensure that all these bad roads in Nigeria, especially in the South East, which are now death traps, are rebuilt.
“Let the Government look into the setting up of many checkpoints on the roads, especially in the Eastern region, which waste people’s time and make movement and transportation very difficult.
“At most of the checkpoints, money is being collected from transporters, thereby greatly increasing the cost of transportation and travel in Nigeria.
“Checkpoints are good if they are few and legitimate, instead of being used for extortion,” he said.
The Archbishop emphasized that he wholeheartedly accepted the lifetime achievement award given to him by the state broadcasting organization, noting that by the special grace of God, his good relationship with IBC, Owerri, will continue to flourish.
He encouraged the management and staff of the corporation to continue being exemplary in their profession at all times so as to ensure objective reportage.
The man of God pointed out that it is important to note that many people will always accept investigative, constructive, truthful, and impartial journalism, especially in matters that involve humanity.
