New on Netflix: August 2020

Here are the new movies and shows you can stream in August, including three “Jurassic Park” films. Check out some of the highlights below, or scroll down to the full list, five things you should definitely watch and what’s leaving Netflix this month.

Project Power (2020)

When a pill that gives its users unpredictable superpowers for five minutes hits the streets of New Orleans, a teenage dealer and a local cop must team with an ex-soldier to take down the group responsible for its creation. Stars Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dominique Fishback, Machine Gun Kelly and Casey Neistat. (Aug. 14)

Work It (2020)

When a young woman’s admission to the college of her dreams depends on her performance at a dance competition, she forms a ragtag group of dancers to take on the best squad in school. Stars Sabrina Carpenter, Liza Koshy and Alabama’s Jordan Fisher. (Aug. 7)

Hoops

A hot-headed, foul-mouthed high school basketball coach tries to make the big leagues by turning around his own awful team. New animated comedy series features voice work from Jake Johnson, Rob Riggle, Natasha Leggero and Ron Funches. (Aug. 21)

Jurassic Park (1993)

Steven Spielberg’s adventure where it all started, the franchise as well as the modern movie blockbuster (in the spirit of Spielberg’s own “Jaws”). During a preview tour, a theme park suffers a major power breakdown that allows its cloned dinosaur exhibits to run amok in Spielberg’s adaptation of Michael Crichton’s hit novel. The state-of-the-art special effects hold up 27 years later, even better than what we see in the sequels. A perfect movie. “The Lost World” and “Jurassic Park III” are also now on Netflix. (Now available)

A Knight’s Tale (2001)

After his master dies, a noble and ambitious peasant squire creates a new identity for himself as a knight. Thoroughly likable and anachronistic medieval adventure proved early on that Heath Ledger had plenty of star power, featuring solid supporting work from Paul Bettany, Alan Tudyk, Mark Addy, Shannyn Sossamon and bad guy Rufus Sewell. (Now available)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

When their relationship turns sour, a young couple undergoes a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories. Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman made a perfect match to tell this mindbending love story, propelled by the two leads Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. (Now available)

Ocean’s Twelve (2004) and Ocean’s Thirteen (2007)

The latter two-thirds of Steven Soderbergh’s breezy heist trilogy holds up well, with these equally delightful follow-ups that see the crew in fine form robbing whomever they can to survive in light of their efforts from the first film. George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon lead the way in these slick sequels, but pay special attention to the late Carl Reiner’s work as Saul. (Now available)

Nightcrawler (2014)

Dan Gilroy’s underrated comedy/thriller stars Jake Gyllenhaal (in a career-best performance) as a morally bankrupt idealist who corners the late night Los Angeles crime reporting market. A razor-sharp dark comedy some might find it hard to stomach, featuring outstanding supporting work from Rene Russo, Riz Ahmed and the late great Bill Paxton. (Aug. 10)

Casino Royale (2006)

Daniel Craig’s James Bond debut set a new tone for the franchise. Here, he must defeat a private banker to terrorists in a high stakes game of poker at Casino Royale, Montenegro, but things are not what they seem. Craig’s follow-up as 007 “Quantum of Solace,” will also begin streaming the same day. (Aug. 31)
