Members of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly have raised new concerns regarding the increasing insecurity throughout the state, stating that the safety of residents can no longer be assured.

The lawmakers, clearly troubled by recent killings and kidnappings, urged Governor Abdullahi Sule to enhance efforts to combat the rising tide of violence affecting both urban and rural areas.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, expressed these concerns while presenting the House’s resolutions during Tuesday’s session in Lafia.

The issue was brought to the attention of the assembly by the Minority Leader, Hon. Luka Iliya Zhekaba, who lamented the frequent attacks on residents in various communities.

Jatau commended Zhekaba for highlighting this critical issue and praised other lawmakers for their contributions to the discussion.

While recognizing that Governor Sule has made progress in tackling security challenges, he emphasized that the current situation necessitates more immediate and focused action.

The southern senatorial district, which borders conflict-ridden areas of Benue State, has become a hotspot for violent crimes, including kidnappings, armed assaults, and unprovoked murders.

This troubling situation has compelled many residents to leave their homes in search of safety.

Despite assurances from the state government that new security measures were being implemented, new attacks rattled several communities over the weekend.

In Giza, Keana Local Government Area, armed individuals invaded the home of Mr. Yusuf Agbo around 11:45 p.m. on Friday.

Gunshots were fired before Agbo and his wife were kidnapped and taken to an undisclosed location. As of Sunday, there had been no contact from the abductors.

A local resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, mentioned that fear had taken over the entire Giza area.

“People are living in fear. Many are moving away. We have decided to take our concerns to God in prayer because all efforts to stop these attacks have been unsuccessful,” the source shared.

The abduction followed a series of raids on Keana communities in recent weeks, despite repeated government promises of improved security.

In a separate incident on Saturday, a couple working on their farm in Barkin Abdullahi (BAD), Lafia Local Government Area, were attacked by suspected Fulani herders.

According to resident James Ovey, the herders allegedly allowed their cattle to graze on the farmland and assaulted the couple with machetes when they confronted them.

The woman suffered a severed left wrist, while her husband sustained serious head injuries. Both victims are currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Lafia.

As of the time of this report, the police had not released an official statement regarding either incident.
