The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reported the destruction of at least 80 containers filled with counterfeit and substandard medicines and food products as part of its nationwide enforcement initiative.
Dr. Martins Iluyomade, the Director of Investigation and Enforcement and Chairman of the Federal Task Force at NAFDAC, shared this information during a press briefing on Saturday, where he also addressed a recent assault on agency officials at the Trade Fair market in Lagos.
Iluyomade emphasized that the agency has faced a continuous struggle against the influx of fake, substandard, and counterfeit medicines and food items in Nigerian markets, particularly in major commercial centers in Lagos.
“We are currently in the process of destroying over 80 containers of counterfeit and substandard products. The moral decline in Nigeria is significant, and many individuals profit from this illegal trade, which is escalating at an alarming rate,” he stated.
“We will persist in our efforts to cleanse these markets as we aim to minimize the presence of substandard products to the lowest possible level,” he added.
The Director characterized the incident that took place on Thursday, October 30, 2025, as a serious threat to enforcement operations, noting that the risks associated with enforcement have become increasingly hazardous for our officials, but it is a necessary task.
He reported, “Approximately 10 operational vehicles valued at over N25 billion were allegedly vandalized during the attack.”
Iluyomade expressed concern over the alarming prevalence of counterfeit and substandard products in Nigeria, especially in major commercial areas, highlighting that many individuals profit from this illegal trade.
