Police have issued an urgent appeal for a potential witness following a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a 77-year-old man.
Emergency services rushed to Abingdon Road in Walton, Merseyside, after the tragic crash occurred yesterday.
The victim, identified as Daniel Cairney, succumbed to his injuries after being struck by a silver Audi at approximately 1:25 PM.
Cairney was transported to the hospital via ambulance but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Detective Sergeant Andy Roper, the lead investigator from Merseyside Police’s Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU), has requested that a woman who was pushing a pram and accompanied by three children before entering Asda come forward.
She is thought to have witnessed the incident.
The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and a 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drug driving.
He is currently in custody.
The victim’s next of kin have been notified and are receiving support from specially trained officers.
An air ambulance reportedly landed nearby in response to the incident, leading to the temporary closure of the road yesterday afternoon.
Detective Roper stated: “First and foremost, our heartfelt condolences go out to Mr. Cairney’s family and friends during this tragic time.
“Our investigation is progressing rapidly, and we are eager to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision or was in the vicinity around 1:25 PM yesterday.
“Any information or CCTV footage you may have could be crucial as we work to piece together the events that transpired.
“I urge drivers in the area with dash cameras to check their footage.
“They may have inadvertently recorded the silver Audi A3 hatchback as it approached the collision site, and our detectives would be very interested in reviewing this footage to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash.”
