Thomas fled the semi-detached home in Merthyr Tydfil, , after the reported assault and was later found dead at Ponsticill Reservoir in the Brecon Beacons.

The alarm was raised by the couple’s two children, 16 and 10, after Thomas left the scene.

Zoe was rushed to University Hospital of where there were reportedly signs that she would recover.

Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries last Monday – six days after the attack.

Zoe’s death left both children orphaned with a fundraiser now set up to help relatives care for them.

Thomas and Zoe had been together since they were teens but were understood to have been in the process of splitting up when the fatal assault occurred.

The case is now being and has been reported to the Glamorgan Coroner, who is due to open inquests this week.

The brutal attack is being probed as a “domestic situation” and cops say they are not searching for anyone else in connection with the incident.

A family friend told The Daily Mail : “It’s the most dreadful scenario and everyone is thinking about the youngsters who lost their mam and dad in a moment of madness.

“They are part of a loving family who will do their best to bring them up but it’s going to be hard for them at those ages.”

Zoe has been described on the page set up for her children as the most “straight-talking, funniest, strongest woman.”

The full tribute to Zoe reads: “As most are aware the beautiful lovely Zoe lost her fight this week, having her life taken from her at the hands of someone else.

“Please be mindful and respectful of the circumstances especially in regards to the children.

“This awful and sudden turn of events has resulted in Zoe’s two children, mother and brother losing a massive part of their close- knit family.

How to get help

EVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicide

It doesn’t discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society – from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.

It’s the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes.

And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.

Yet it’s rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.

If you, or anyone you know, needs help dealing with mental health problems, the following organisations provide support:

“I’m hoping by creating this page It can at least release some financial burden on the family at least for the two amazing children who have lost the biggest most important person ever to them, during a big time in both their lives.

“Zoe was the most straight talking, funniest, strongest woman but more than anything was an amazing Mother who did everything for her children as we all would, it’s not her fault she isn’t still here for them.

“I know there’s so many people expressing love and respect to Zoe and her family, please if you could all spare even the smallest amount it would be forever appreciated.

“Many thanks in advance to everyone.”

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: “The investigation into the serious assault of a 35-year-old woman in Penydarren, Merthyr Tydfil continues and is now being treated as a homicide by South Wales Police.
