Police have confirmed two foreigners and a local resident have died, and at least five people have been injured.

At least 20 hikers – including nine tourists – are missing.

North Halmahera police chief Erlichson Pasaribu said they entered Mount Dukono despite a climbing ban.

Iwan Ramdani, the head of the local rescue agency, said dozens of personnel, including police, have been deployed to search for the 20 hikers trapped by the eruption.

Nine of the hikers are Singaporean and the rest are Indonesians, Iwan said.

Authorities warned residents to refrain from any activities within 4km of the crater.
