MIKE ASHLEY has made a bid to buy Sheffield Wednesday worth around £20million, according to reports.

The former Newcastle United owner is deemed a serious contender to save the Owls after they entered administration in October.

The Telegraph write that , 61, signalled his intentions on Tuesday night.

Two American-based consortiums are also said to be deemed credible by the administrators.

Begbies Traynor are pushing for proof of £50million of funds to proceed and want to name a preferred bidder by December 5.

Ashley has shown interest in buying Derby County and Reading during their struggles but has remained out of the game since selling Newcastle in October 2021.

The retail tycoon is CEO of Sports Direct and Frasers Group, banking over £300million for the sale of Newcastle to the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF).
