Vaughan was ushered inside the restaurant by a security guard and the venue was placed on lockdown, with the shutters closed.

There were fears people were being taken hostage and attacks were breaking out all over the city.

Vaughn said on Piers Morgan Uncensored : “We were in the pub. I was outside on the phone and then all of a sudden all the police cars were flying by.

“I presumed it was a shark attack or something happening on the beach.

“I didn’t expect what I then found out a few minutes later when there was a security guard outside the pub telling us there was someone with a gun and people were being held hostage.

“We all got told to get inside the pub and into the restaurant. More news started to filter through that there had been an attack down on the beach.

“More and more news started to transcend that it was a terror attack, and it was not much longer that they started to lock the doors and told us all to stay.

“There was so much happening on social media that there were more attacks going on around Sydney.

“For a period we did not have a clue what was going on and we were just locked inside this restaurant.”

Vaughan spoke about the terror and confusion he felt during the panic, and praised the civilian who was able to disarm one of the assailants.

He wrote in The Telegraph : “I have never experienced anything like it.

“You know what’s happening around you, but you don’t want to believe it’s happening. There were people eating but it was a very sombre atmosphere.

“There were six of us – me, my wife, her sister, my two daughters, and one of their friends. Obviously I was trying to stay as calm as possible because the youngsters know what is happening and you don’t want to give them anything else to fear.

“You can only imagine what could have happened if that , and disarmed him. What a hero. The police response and everyone around was very calm.

“I love the Aussie spirit. They don’t pull any punches. The front page of the local paper today read You B******s. They are calling it for what it is.

“Sometimes in the UK we are almost apologetic or make excuses in these situations.”
