The incident occurred in Southend-on-Sea around 2am in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Essex Police confirmed three men and one woman had been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

Officers were called to Chichester Road in Southend after reports of a fight between two factions, believed to involve knives.

An armed response unit rushed to the scene, where the man with stab wounds was found.

It later emerged the victim had also been hit by a vehicle, causing him “serious and potentially life-changing” injuries.

Two suspects fled the scene in a vehicle which officers later located at Southend General Hospital.

Another vehicle, thought to be involved in the crash, was stopped by police on the M25 in Hertfordshire.

It is understood one of the men arrested currently remains in hospital for treatment.

The horror attack came after a night of carnage in the seaside town.

Police said they believe the stabbing was linked to an earlier disturbance near South Street Bar in Westcliff around 1am.

The force has launched a “fast-moving” probe into the circumstances of the public knife fight.

It also reassured locals that the people involved are believed to have been known to one another.

Chief Superintendent Chris Bradford said: “I understand how concerning this incident will be to the local community.

“I want to reassure you that officers have made quick arrests and we believe that those involved are known to each other.

“You will see an increased policing presence in the area and I encourage you to come and talk to us. I would also ask anyone who has information, CCTV or dashcam footage to contact us.

“This investigation is in its early stages, but this type of violent behaviour has no place in Southend and we will not tolerate it.”
