TWO MAJOR motorways have been closed this morning, throwing thousands of journeys into chaos.
Both the M4 and the M6 have been closed following major crashes on both roads.
The M6 has been closed in both directions between J41 and J42 after a lorry overturned while travelling southwards.
The massive vehicle crashed through the central reservation onto the northbound carriage way, causing traffic to grind to a halt.
Emergency services including Cumbria Police, the North West Ambulance Service and Cumbria Fire and Rescue are in attendance at the scene.
Drivers have been warned to expect lengthy delays as work to move the vehicle continues.
Also, M4 Eastbound has also been forced to close in Berkshire, between J13 and J12.
All emergency services are at work between the junctions, following a major collision on the road.
As with the M6, National Highways has warned Brits to expect lengthy delays throwing thousands of journeys into chaos.
The news comes after the drink-drive limit is set to be “slashed” in the “biggest shake-up” to road laws in “years”.
Government ministers are expected to reduce the drink-drive limit in England and Wales from 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath to just 22 micrograms – according to The Times .
That would bring the limit down to the same level as Scotland’s road laws.
Reportedly, officials believe that the current road safety messages are failing to reduce the number of fatal collisions.
Last year, 1,633 people died in road traffic accidents with 28,000 people being left seriously injured.
That’s an average of one casualty every 18 minutes and the highest level of serious injuries on the roads since 2007.
Ministers are also reportedly planning to ban over 70s from driving if they fail compulsory eye tests.
