The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC, have commenced investigations into the cause of a fire outbreak involving a gas pipeline along Agege Motor Road in Lagos.

Emergency responders were able to successfully contain the blaze after distress alerts were received through the state’s emergency hotlines.

According to reports, LASEMA immediately activated a full emergency response operation, with its Eagle Response Team arriving at the Ile Zik area in Agege at about 3:13 a.m., where officials discovered that an NNPCL gas pipeline had been engulfed by fire.

Authorities said the exact cause of the incident had yet to be determined.

Investigators from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service are currently working with NNPCL safety personnel to establish the source of the pipeline fire.

LASEMA confirmed that no casualty or injury was recorded during the incident, attributing the outcome to the rapid intervention of emergency responders who promptly evacuated residents and secured the surrounding area.

Containment measures were immediately put in place to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby residential buildings, filling stations, and other sensitive infrastructure within the vicinity.

Traffic management officials also diverted motorists from the affected corridor to ease congestion and ensure public safety.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, assured residents that the situation had been brought under control, adding that the state government was collaborating with NNPCL to safely isolate the affected pipeline.

He disclosed that a comprehensive integrity assessment would be conducted on the facility before operations resume.

“The protection of lives and property remains our top of the priority,” Oke-Osanyintolu said, noting that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had continued to strengthen emergency response infrastructure across the state.

Residents and motorists were advised to avoid the Agege Motor Road axis and make use of alternative routes, including Old Abeokuta Road and the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

Authorities also urged the public not to engage in panic buying of petroleum products, stressing that the incident posed no immediate threat to fuel supply within the state.

Residents were further encouraged to report suspicious activities or cases of pipeline vandalism through the state emergency numbers, 767 and 112.

LASEMA stated that a detailed post-incident report would be released after the conclusion of investigations.
