A victim of the Oworonshoki demolition in Lagos State has reached out to the state government, the traditional ruler of the area, and compassionate individuals for assistance, expressing that they are currently homeless.
In an interview on ‘The Morning Brief’, a program aired on Channels Television and monitored by DAILY POST on Monday, a 63-year-old victim, who chose to remain anonymous, stated that they have nowhere to go.
“We are not animals; we are not goats. The government should please assist us. Before the demolition, we witnessed some individuals receiving N200,000 and N300,000, which was given to the locals. Many of those who accepted the money do not even have a home. They are residents of Oworonshoki,” she explained.
“We were not informed that the demolition was going to take place in our area. Even if they intend to demolish our homes, is N200,000 sufficient to secure a new house? I cannot leave my children behind. We were living inside this tank when they came and set it on fire,” she added.
“Some of us were sleeping inside the water tank. Others used cloth for bedding, and they burned those items as well. We are simply trying to survive. Some people spend the night on the streets, wherever they can find a place to rest,” she lamented.
“I plead with the Lagos state government to intervene. They should show compassion towards us. We are not animals; we are human beings. This situation is unbearable. There are individuals among us who have suffered strokes and cannot even stand,” the distressed elderly woman implored.
